Voices from the land that holds you, and the rocks, from which you fell

In Iceland, January 6th is celebrated with bonfires and fireworks. It is called “þrettándinn” and is considered to be the thirteenth and last day of Christmas. It is believed to be the most likely day for interaction with the hidden people (huldufólk) and other mystical creatures, those who live in a landscape of intensities, a land that is alive and filled with sound.

We asked, cautious of the consequences of angering the huldufólk, if we might record them; not with the intention of exposing them, or to extract from them, but from a desire to understand languages of nature and all that is.

We made them an offering, played them a sound piece and waited, in the hope of an answer.

A short art-film, documentary, made in collaboration with Mark Rothmaa-Jackson premiered at Eavesdropping London, Cafe OTO and Herðubreið Seyðisfjörður on March 24th 2024.
